The Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association (SLGJA) was inaugurated in 2003 with the amalgamation of the Sri Lanka Jewellers and Gem Merchants’ Federation (formed in 1970), the Sri Lanka Gem Traders’ Association (formed in 1975), the Sri Lanka Jewellery Manufacturing Exporters Association and the Lapidary Association.
SLGJA, as the apex body of the gem and jewellery industry in Sri Lanka, currently has over 300 members.

My main focus is to further develop the international links we have with similar organizations, worldwide. Toward this end, along with the Executive Committee, I plan on fostering and nurturing the relationships we have with the other international gem buying nations.

The key countries I would like to engage with are Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, the UK, USA, Germany and some other European countries. While we engage in discussions at various fora, we would concentrate on signing MOUs and conducting multi-lateral discussions on a regular basis.

Further, SLGJA, as the intermediary between the players in the industry, the government and the regulatory bodies, will also be instrumental in intervening on behalf of, and representing the industry to derive maximum benefit for all the stakeholders. The close relationship the association has with the government bodies will be further nurtured with a view to promoting Sri Lankan gems and jewellery, and the allied trades in the country to the international markets.

I look forward to achieving the targets that my Executive Committee and I have set - vis-à-vis to make the gem and jewellery industry in Sri Lanka one that would thrive, and the positive outcomes of which would thereafter filter down to every stakeholder.
